In this simple article, you will get to know how to convert a timestamp into a standard date format.

I came across such a question on StackOverflow I thought my solution will be of great use.

Question:: How can I convert that to a readable date/time in PHP? I have tried srttotime, etc. to no avail.

He mentioned the function strtotime() that does the magic but had failed to get what he wanted.

We are going to use two functions to get this right, date() and strtotime().

The date() function formats a local date and time, and returns the formatted date string.

Syntax
copy

	date(format, timestamp)

The strtotime function expects to be given a string containing an English date format and will try to parse that format into a Unix timestamp, relative to the timestamp given in now, or the current time if now is not supplied.

For more detailed information, watch this video below, I went ahead and worked with MySQL database to give you a real world example how on you can work with dynamic data.

The timestamp below is the standard format but hand-coded for the sake of this article. So watch the video above to see how you can get dynamic data from the database and convert it to your own date formats.

As you can see the date() wraps or takes in both the date formats specified and also the strtotime() taking in the timestamp string.

copy

$timestamp = "2020-01-01 12:06:08";
$date = date("M d, Y",strtotime($timestamp));

echo $date;

//Output
Jan 01, 2020
